1. At the Scene

  • Do not move the cars (unless unsafe).
  • Take "Four Corners" photos of all sides of both vehicles.
  • Photograph the debris field and skid marks (point of impact).
  • Unplug your dashcam immediately to preserve footage.
  • Photograph the other driver's Insurance Card and Driver's License.

2. Assess the Damage

  • Damage Check: Look for "Hidden" damage (misaligned doors, frame "wrinkles").
  • Car Seat Rule: Any child car seat in the vehicle must be replaced. Save the receipt.
  • Personal Property: List all damaged items inside the car (laptops, phones, etc.).
  • Towing: Keep the tow company's business card and the address of the storage location.

3. Dealing with the Insurance Adjuster

  • Repair Shop: You have the legal right to choose YOUR repair facility.
  • Parts: Demand Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Parts.
  • New Damage: Ensure the shop files a "Supplement" claim if more damage is found after disassembly.
  • Diminished Value: If your car is less than 5 years old and has no prior accidents, ask for a "Diminished Value" payment.

4. Essential Document Folder

  • Police Report: Obtain the report number (usually 3-5 days after the crash).
  • Maintenance: Keep recent receipts for new tires, brakes, etc. (increases "Actual Cash Value").
  • Rental Log: Track the number of days you were without a vehicle.
  • Total Loss: If totaled, request the "Market Valuation Report" from the adjuster.

⚠️ Do not sign a Property Damage Release until you know the full extent of your claim. Settling the car claim quickly often waives your injury rights.
